Understanding Writing Analyses

What we now understand about analyzing writing:
You need to follow certain steps, in order.
You need to know what questions to ask.
You need to know what the point of the analysis is.
How to identify patterns in data and info.
You need to know how to connect to readers.
You need to look at text and see how it supports your claim.
You need to know how authors establish authority .
You need to know what emotions the text appeals to.
You need to know that analysis has to be instructional and informational.

How "Stay Sweet As You Are" fits the criteria:

The author uses a clear point to establish the topic sentence. He claimed that advertisements aimed at women encourage them to like beauty products that reinforce a male's role in their life.  He identified patterns in his data by analyzing the advertisements. He specifically picked apart ads that used men to reinforce the product. In the soap ad he proved that the soap was showing that women who want to get married need to have clear skin and even if they have wit and grace men wont be attracted to them. He looked at the text in the ads and explained how this supported his claim. He also knew what the emotions in the advertisements were and showed that they were trying to shame women into buying the products. He also is informative in his analysis by sticking to his claim, and using three different ads to prove his point. The essay "Stay Sweet as You Are" definitely fits the criteria to be an analysis essay.

ad analysis

  1. companies that publish the ads are, PETA, Freedom For Animals, and Mercy For Animals.
  2. These adds are intended for human beings in general.
  3. Because these organizations clearly do not want anyone to mistreat animals in any way. They use their ad techniques in a way that doesn't appeal to one group of people.
  4. The purpose of these is to make people think about what they do. The creators of these ads are wanting people to realize that maybe the way they treat animals is wrong.
  5. These people are clearly animals lovers, and believe that animals should have the same rights that humans do. They are working towards their purpose by getting the word out through ads, and making people think twice about what their doing.
  6. Its obvious when they say things like "If you wouldn't wear your dog.... please don't wear any fur." Its basically saying why wear any animal if you wouldn't wear your own.
  7. "Stop the mistreatment, and cruelty of animals today, by using ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to us."

rough draft

Enjoying reading

When I was ten I was in fourth grade and went to Green Mountain elementary. I struggled as a student. I had many problems when reading and trying to comprehend ligature. I was placed in many different study groups and classes prior to this time to help me be more successful at reading and writing. But there was one problem with this. Reading and writing weren’t enjoyable for me at all. I despised it so I would doing anything possible not to read or write. I would skip a study group I was supposed to go to during recess on certain days. Almost every time I had a writing assignment due I would pretend I was sick at home just to not attend class. And I wouldn’t do any reading or writing at home for homework. But in fourth grade a lot of this changed.

My fourth grade teachers name was Mrs. Langholff. She was a tall woman with short black hair. She was a mid-aged woman I believe in her mid-30’s. She dressed in black from most of the times I can recall seeing her. She was one of my favorite teachers of all time she was always a kind lady and helped me during this time because I had just transferred from sand hill elementary and I was having a hard transition.

Once a month our class would go to library to check out books. The walls of the library were all white with large bookcases lining them full of books. In the center of the large room is smaller book cases running parallel to each other. Next to this off to the side is a section full of tables to sit at and read. And off to the back of the room is a computer lab.  We had a whole month to read the book. The library was always quite because as I remember we had a very strict librarian who didn’t like any noise. The first couple months of this I always picked one of the few books that I had already read or books that previous teacher read to the class. But after a while I ran out of books to do this for so I had to come to grips with the situation and actually pick a book to read. The only problem though was I had no idea what to read and was very bad at deciding on what to read.

After a long time of myself aimlessly walking around the library mostly just trying to pass time and all of the other kids were sitting down reading Mrs. Langholff came up to me, And said “do you need help finding something to read? You’ve been walking around for 20 minutes and still don’t have a book.”

I did need help so I said “yeah, I can find anything”

“What kind of books do like to read” said Mrs. Langholff

 “Adventure” I said

“Have you read harry potter?” said Mrs. Langholff

“No I don’t like Harry Potter” I replied with

“Have you read the series of unfortunate events?” said Mrs. Langholff

 “No. What’s that?” I questioned

“It’s about three orphans that try to escape a man their placed in foster care with” said Mrs. Langholff

“Okay I’ll try that I guess” I said

So I went over to the check out and checked out the book. I didn’t read the book at all with the class time I had in the library. I didn’t even start reading the book until the whole month was almost over. A Couple days before my time was up to read the book my mom finally forced me to start reading the book. Once I started reading the book I didn’t stop until I was about half way through! I was a slow reader so I had been reading for couple hours. I was so intrigued by the story I couldn’t stop for the longest time which was very unusual for me. Normally I hate reading and everything to do with it. The next day I came home laid in my bed and I read the last half of the book again without stopping. I was so interested in the story about the orphans that were placed into a very bad foster home. I went to school the next day and took the quiz on the book. I had gotten 100%. I enjoyed the book so much next time the class went to the library I checked out the next book in the series.

1.       “the water pressure was so strong that water spurted out of the kitchen sink like a fountain”(page 130 paragraph 1)

2.       “She slept on her floor for two nights” (page 129 paragraph 2)

3.       “She was unable to shut the door against the brown rushing water” ( page 129 paragraph 4)  “ Horrified. She tried not to panic” ( page 129 paragraph 4)

4.       Possible topics: getting interested in reading for the first time in elementary school when I read the “Series of Unfortunate Events” books, when my brother taught me how to read, learning how to set up blogger and post blogs, learning how to write persuasive essays in 7th grade

5.       My story I want to tell is about when I first gained interest in reading when I was in the fourth grade. My purpose for telling this story is mainly to fulfil my assignment but also to explore my past learnings.

6.       The audience I will be presenting my work will all most likely of had a similar experience of gaining interest in reading. I believe I will not have to do much explaining because almost everyone has had a similar experience.

7.       My attitude is affectionate to my story. I intend for the narrative to be a fairly serious story.

8.       My narrative will be in print form

9.       I see myself in my elementary school library at Green Mountain elementary school. The walls are all white with large bookcases lining them full of books. In the center of the large room is smaller book cases running parallel to each other. Next to tis off to the side is a section full of tables to sit at and read. And off to the back of the room is a computer lab.

10.   I hear classmates of mine talking and the librarian helping them trying to figure out what books to check out.

11.   I remember the smell of the library being musty and the smell of old books and paper

12.   I feel warm and a smooth laminated wooden table that I’m sitting at.

13.   I have the taste of mint gum in my mouth

14.    My teachers name was Mrs.  Langholff she was a tall woman with short black hair. She was a mid-aged woman I believe in her mid-30’s she was my fourth grade teacher at the time. She dressed in black from most of the times I can recall seeing her. She spoke slowly and clearly most of the time.

15.   Teacher: “do you need help finding something to read? You’ve been walking around for 20 minutes and still don’t have a book.”

Me: “yeah, I can find anything”

Teacher: “what kind of books do like to read”

Me: “adventure”

Teacher: “Have you read harry potter?”

Me: “no I don’t like Harry Potter”

Teacher: “have you read the series of unfortunate events?”

Me: “no. What’s that?”

Teacher: “it’s about three orphans that try to escape a man their placed in foster care with”

Me: “okay I’ll try that I guess”

16.   The action was very calm as I had first discovered a book and started reading it.

17.   The discovery of these books were actually very significant making myself actually enjoy reading. After reading these books I became a daily reader. Before this time it was very rare for myself to actually pick up a book and decide to read it. Which I did almost every night after this time. This experience has overall made myself a better reader. If this moment did not happen my life could have been affected dramatically. Before this time I struggle vary much with reading and I would need a lot of extra help from teachers and tutors. This story matters to me because it overall made me a better reader and helped me with my education.

Lydia's Story

1.       The main point in Brideau’s essay in the story “Lydia’s Story” by Jan Brideau is that you must stay positive in tragic times. This is indicated in the last sentence of the story “Lydia’s story stays with me the most… sense of hope and determination in the face of terrible adversity”(Brideau 131)

2.       The primary point of view is third person. The impact of this point of view is that it is less detailed because Brideau is telling the story and not Lydia.

3.       Brideau make the narrative “come alive” by using words such as terrified, cried, alone, screaming, and horrified. This appeals to the reader’s emotions because it makes the reader scared for Lydia’s life.

4.        The audience of the magazine “Health Affairs” could be set for medical workers. Brideau’s tone suits those readers because of the phrases she used such as “eager to have her tooth examined” (Brideau 128) and “she worked in an emergency room of a local hospital and was soon to become a physician”(Brideau 131).

Chapter 2

I have encountered writing many different types of literature in the past week. Such as texting friends in a group chat, posting blogs, making differences charts, writing my resignation for work, writing a good experience narrative about myself, and sending emails. But texting my friends in a group chat, posting blogs, and my resignation for work have stood out. There was a different rhetorical situation for each of these. For each of these required thinking about the type of genre I wrote in, my audience, my purpose, my stance, and my design.
When I text my friends the type of genre varies and constantly it changes. The type’s genre I’ll talk to them in can change from narratives, arguments, comedy, persuasive, and others. My audience is my friends so I feel I can speak freely with no restraints.my propose is to stay in touch with them and to make plans to hangout. My stance can vary depending on the conversation.
My blog I posted this week was an informative post to the answer ‘is everyone an author?”. My audience in this case is my classmates to be discussed. So in this situation I have to write a lot more professionally then I would when texting friends.
This week I turned in my resignation for work. My audience was my boss making my statement having to be professional. I had an objective stance in this statement unlike the other situations. My objective was quitting but still stay on good terms so if I had to return I would have a place to work once again.
