For Poetry it was necessary for us to consider what words would get the meaning across the quickest. For a play we had to consider how people talk to each other, and for our shopping list we had to think about things people can do to help us.

            The medias views of cigarettes have changed many times over the past century. The dramatic change in the view of cigarettes is very well documented by looking at the ads in the past hundred years. In the 1950’s ads doctors actually recommended cigarettes. Later in the 1980’s ads doctors said that some cigarettes were better for you then others. In an ad in just the past few years it symbolizes that if you smoke cigarettes that you are eventually going to kill yourself. People have believed what the media has been said about cigarettes. This shows how the ads can influence how people think about products.

                        This 1950’s ad show how smoking is advertised by stating “more doctors smoke camels than any other cigarette”. This ad shows a doctor smoking a cigarette. This shows consumers that if doctors smoke cigarettes then why shouldn’t they too. Consumers wouldn’t think there would be any health concerns. this because doctors would normally be known for their health as well as knowing for any health concerns. This is what would drive many people to start smoking or smoke more. The ad also says that “doctors from every branch’s of medicine 113597 in all” recommended camels more than any other cigarette.
     

       Later in the 1980’s with research and with some knowledge of what cigarettes can do to you; ads started to claim that certain cigarettes were less irritating than others. According to 20,679 doctors “Luckies are less irritating”. This implies that Luckies are less irritating than any other cigarette making them healthier. Just like the last ad another strategy this ad used was

having doctors promote the cigarettes. In the picture the doctor seems really happy when holding the pack of Luckies which might make some buyers want to buy the pack to be happy. This ad would make people not a concerned about their health if the smoke.

       With more research on cigarettes these days’ people aren’t very fond of cigarettes. Most ads in the 20^th century only target the large Tabaco company’s. in todays world with as much research we have about cigarettes we know that they are very cancerous and cause many other side affects involving your health. Now on many Tabaco products there are warnings saying that the products can cause cancer and other side affects. With this ad it is a symbolic picture.

in the picture the man is smoking a cigarette. The smoke from the cigarette forms a gun that is pointed directly towards his head. The symbolic meaning behind what this picture is trying to say is if you smoke you will slowly kill yourself, and its another form of suicide. Also in very small text it says “Kill a cigarette save a life. Yours.” the meaning of this ad as a whole is you have to kill the habit cigarettes if you don’t want to kill yourself. This ad and many more like it makes consumers not want to smoke anymore.

Thinking Rhetorically

     The question is what is rhetoric thinking? there is a lot to what rhetoric thinking is. to rhetorically think you have to be able to listen an analyze what someone is saying or has written. when analyzing you have to examine all of the points of view and ask yourself why that the person is thinking this way. To think rhetorically you have to do your research also, so you have a better understanding of the topic. also when in a discussion you have to give the other people your talking to and the things you've researched credit.    

Rhetorical Situations-Narratives

We all agreed that bravery and determination are the most things in the face of adversary and that this is indicated at the end of the story. Also we agreed that the point of view was first person narrative which let readers become emotionally connected and also allowed for Brideau’s commentary. I wrote that her use of surrealism and simple terms allowed her to bring emotion and life to the story. Other group members also added that her inclusion of details that brought out the humanity of the story made it seem more life-like. All of us put that the audience consisted of health care workers. As for how Brideau worked to sway them to her side, some of us put that she tried to make Lydia as relatable as possible by mentioning how much of a compassionate nurse she was, and other put that she used very personal and emotional words and phrases to appeal the pathos of the readers. Despite our differences in what we wrote, we all agreed with each other on our points on Brideau's persuasion techniques.

When "Lydia's Story" and Chapter 2 are put side by side it becomes apparent the relationship between the two. Most of the rhetorical strategies mentioned in chapter 2 appear in Lydia's story. It is very clear Brideau knows exactly who she is writing to in the way she tailors each sentence to best relate to and persuade the health care workers reading. Also, the way Brideau ties a relatively minor story back to a larger context, the support of Katrina survivors, is a masterful use of rhetoric. Chapter 2 and Lydia's Story also makes us realize the use of rhetoric in our own writing, especially our own bias. Many of the elements we incorporate into our writing subconsciously become clear, such as the way we change our writing styles and tones to better fit our expected audience.

Some of the stories that we all hear on a day-to-day basis include drama between people, various tasks and commonly occurring events during the day, tragedies to those we knew, and stories about unusual things we have previously done. These various types of narratives all include one recurring motif, the emotions of various people in differing situations. These narratives interest us because we relate to the people in them and learn new information that might help us in future situations.

Those around the same age as us and those with a sense of humor and those who were not afraid to expose their emotions were the most powerful to us. Short concise videos also increased the overall impact of the videos because they didn't water down the person's point. Longer videos which included the person narrating their own story were also very powerful in the way that they made us relate to the speaker.

In a History textbook, narrating is kept in a very neutral tone which makes the story telling uninteresting but also unoffensive or controversial. If a History narrative was presented in the form a a video game or movie, it would become much more interesting but at the same time might not get the main concept of what it is trying to teach across as well. A narrative such as a YouTube video is very visually interesting but if the narratives medium was changed to a text based format it would lose much of its appeal. A history textbook and a Youtube video are similar in that they both can convey a message but while a History Textbook tends to be lengthy and very explanatory a YouTube video is far more concise but at the sacrifice of depth.

the moral of my story 1st paper

1.       The moral of my story is that reading can help you become a better overall student. Reading books that I really enjoyed gave me more interest in reading. 

2.       My audience is my classmates. I assumed that my audience had similar experience to mine. I had to make my story interesting to feed my audience’s needs. I did this my being descriptive.

3.       The reaction of my editor was that my story was that it needed a little work but she could tell the overall story was coming together. She helped me lay out a plan for my final paper and this classmate helped make sure I was using correct grammar.

4.       I found it interesting that the story came back to me so easily.

Enjoying reading

                        When was the first time you learned to love to read? Even if you don’t love to read everyone’s had an enjoyable experience from reading. Reading is a wonderful thing. You can gather lots of information from picking up any book and just reading a page or two. In my case it really improved my grades and improved my education experience as a whole  My first enjoyable experience occurred for me when I was ten I was in fourth grade and went to Green Mountain elementary. I struggled as a student. I had many problems when reading and trying to comprehend literature. I was placed in many different study groups and classes prior to this time to help me be more successful at reading and writing. But there was one problem with this. Reading and writing weren’t enjoyable for me at all. I would doing anything possible not to read or write. I would skip a study group I was supposed to go to during recess on certain days. Almost every time I had a writing assignment due I would pretend I was sick at home just to not attend class. I wouldn’t do any reading or writing at home for homework. But in fourth grade a lot of this changed.

      My fourth grade teachers name was Mrs. Langholff. She was a tall woman with short black hair that was usually curled. She was a mid-aged woman, I believe in her mid-30’s. She dressed in black am usually long dresses from most of the times I can recall seeing her. She had two sons that went to the school also. One was named Conner the other was named Keagan. She was one of my favorite teachers of all time she was always a kind lady and helped me during this time because I had just transferred from Sand Hill Elementary and I was having a hard transition.

      Once a month our class would go to library to check out books. The walls of the library were all white with large bookcases lining them full of books. In the center of the large room was smaller book cases running parallel to each other. Next to this off to the side was a section full of tables to sit at and read. And off to the back of the room was a computer lab.  We had a whole month to read the book. The library was always quite because as I remember we had a very strict librarian who didn’t like any noise. But for some reason, I had no idea why but she was always nice to me. I don’t remember her name but she was a very short woman with short black hair. She was an older lady I could tell because she had a very wrinkly face and many grey hairs. The first couple months of this I always picked one of the few books that I had already read or books that previous teacher read to the class. But after a while I ran out of books to do this for so I had to come to grips with the situation and actually pick a book to read. The only problem though was I had no idea what to read and was very bad at deciding on what to read.

      At first I just walked around and talked to friends and looked at picture books. But eventually everyone had sat down with books that they had checked out and I was the only one still looking. So after a long time of myself aimlessly walking around the library mostly just trying to pass time and all of the other kids were sitting down reading Mrs. Langholff came up to me, And said “Do you need help finding something to read? You’ve been walking around for 20 minutes and still don’t have a book.”

I did need help so I said “Yeah, I can find anything.”

 “What kind of books do you like to read?” replied Mrs. Langholff

 “Adventure” I said

“Have you read Harry Potter?” said Mrs. Langholff

 “No I don’t like Harry Potter.” I explained

 “Have you read The Series of Unfortunate Events?” said Mrs. Langholff

 “No. What’s that?” I questioned

“It’s about three orphans that try to escape a man their placed in foster care with” said Mrs. Langholff

“Okay I’ll try that I guess” I replied with

   So I went over to the check out to check out the book. The librarian looked at the book and said “This has always been a popular book! And one of my all-time favorites.”                                  

    I still wasn’t convinced to read it even after my teacher and librarian both recommended it and said it was good. I didn’t end up reading the book at all with the class time I had in the library. I didn’t even start reading the book until the whole month was almost over. A couple days before my time was up to read the book my mom finally forced me to start reading the book. Once I started reading the book I didn’t stop until I was about half way through! I was a slow reader so I had been reading for couple hours. I was so intrigued by the story I couldn’t stop for the longest time which was very unusual for me. Normally I hate reading and everything to do with it. Mainly because I’ve never been good at it so I never really tried. The next day I came home laid in my bed and I read the last half of the book again without stopping. I was so interested in the story about the orphans that were placed into a very bad foster home. I went to school the next day and took the quiz on the book. I had gotten 100%. I was also so delighted that I received 100 %, I had whole new motive for doing my school work.  I enjoyed the book so much next time the class went to the library I checked out the next book in the series. For the rest of the year I continued going to the library and checking out the books until I read them all. From there on out it was easy to pick up almost any book and read it while keeping interest in it.

     After discovering these books and reading the whole series I learned to enjoy reading. I became a daily reader. Before this time it was very rare for myself to actually pick up a book and decide to read it. Which I did almost every night after this time. This experience has overall made myself a better reader. If this moment did not happen my life could have been affected dramatically. Before this time I struggle very much with reading and I would need a lot of extra help from teachers and tutors. This story matters to me because it overall made me a better reader by helping me comprehend stories and giving myself a bigger vocabulary. It helped me with my education as a whole with subjects such as math, history, writing, and of course reading.

    My name is Jacob. I go to klahowya secondary school. I am a senior this year in high school but I am attending my first year of running start. I play two sports, swim and baseball. baseball is my favorite sport that I've played since I was five. my primary position is pitcher and my secondary is third base. I've been swimming on the swim team for two years now. I work at the seabeck conference center and have worked there for almost 2 years now.
